When originally built in the 18th century the Puerta de Alcala’ was the ceremonial entrance into Madrid for visitors coming from the east. Today it is sits squarely in the middle of the city following Madrid’s expansion in the last 200 years, and serves more as an architectural symbol of the Spanish capital. The beautiful triumphal gate is made mostly of granite stone and was built in the 1770s under the reign of King Carlos III, whose name appears in the inscription in the middle arch. Its architect was Italian artist Francesco Sabatini, who also worked on Madrid’s Royal Palace.
