FORT FREDERICK, Grenada -- On our way back to St. George's from Grand Etang National Park, we stopped at Fort Frederick. The fort, built by the French in 1779 and still in use by the Grenada's armed forces in 1983, was targeted for bombardment by U.S. forces during the U.S.-led invasion of the island on October 25 of that year. A nearby mental hospital was hit instead by mistake, thus preserving the fort and its spectacular views of the southwestern portion of the island.
