Omaha Beach: WN 62 and the Engineer Memorial por Dog Company

This is one of the bunkers of WN62 and down below you can see Omaha Beach. Underneath this memorial and on the left side of the bunker is a gigantic opening for an artillery piece. Behind and to the left are at least two mortar pits. Down and to the right is a machine gun nest that, if I remember right, was one of the deadliest on Omaha as the gunner burned up to 12 MG 42 barrels by the time the bunker was hit (the gunner lived and was taken prisoner). For those of you who know the photographs of Life Magazine photographer Robert Capa, he would have landed on Omaha on the beach in the leftmost side of the picture. That is right underneath the American cemetery in Colleville. If you see the ground sloping by the bunker, where the water stain (looks like one) is, that's the beginning of a trench that was filled with German infantry and machine gunners. The Big Red One Memorial is right up the hill to the left, appropriately, as this is the area where the 116th Infantry Regiment, especially Company E, was absolutely decimated. By the way, the Engineer memorial is also appropriate as it was around here that the Engineers breached the German defenses. I am not sure, but I thought I remember that it was on eastern Omaha (so maybe this sector?) that Banagalore torpedoes were used. The Bangalore torpedoes were back-ups in case shelling and bombing did not destroy the barbed wire. Each trooper carried a segment (imagine a long tube), and when several were attached with a warhead at the end, the could be slid into the barbed wire and detonated. If you saw the movie The Big Red One, they used one and a lot of men died, and Mark Hamill saved the day. Not a fun concept.
